Therese A. Edwards, Galewood Elementary Principal

Galewood Elementary is a neighborhood school just blocks from downtown Charlotte.  .  Situated on land that was formerly a farm, the twelve two-hundred year old oaks bring character to our school, from which our motto has grown:  “Our Roots Start Here”.

The staff and students of Galewood Elementary are proud of the rich heritage of our school.  For over 50 years, dedicated professional teachers have educated the Charlotte youth at our school.

Our mission states:

Reaching

Everyone’s

Scholastic and social

Potential in an

Environment that is

Caring and

Thoughtful

Working to help all children succeed starts with a committed staff, dedicated to excellence and willing to continually develop their own skills.  All teachers have been trained in balanced literacy, assisted in developing curriculum in the core areas (English Language Arts, math, science and social studies), created a learning community study group that continually discusses teaching and learning best practices, and have successfully completed the North Central Accreditation process that is nationally known.  And each day, all staff greets our students with an eager smile to start another adventure into the world of knowledge.

Much of this is possible because the entire staff discovered many years ago that a positive school culture is necessary to make teaching and learning happen on a daily basis.  Galewood Elementary is a school that strives to enable students to recognize the best in others and in themselves -- by actively teaching skills such as listening, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, honesty, and cooperation.  It takes real team work and cohesiveness on the part of all staff members to make this a reality every day.  Our expectations are high – students achieve them and feel safe in our school.

We know that children strive and do succeed when a partnership between home and school has been established.  We welcome and invite all parents to be involved, to be present at school events and in our daily routines.  As principal of Galewood Elementary School, I invite parents to PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization) meetings (the first Monday of each month), to attend parent programs and to call with suggestions, concerns and queries. It is through this partnership that students understand and grasp that education is a key to successful and productive lives as citizens.

Come and join us.  After all – “Our Roots Start Here”.
