CHARLOTTE PUBLIC SCHOOLS ELEMENTARY MUSIC EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT:
To provide a musical education which develops the social, intellectual, emotional, cultural, and artistic well-being of all students.
IMPORTANT COMPONENTS OF OUR PROGRAM:
*We educate children about the existence, performance, creation, composition, history, function, and value of music in our time.
*We craft lessons to cultivate students' beat competency and pitch accuracy--two basic skills which can yield a lifetime of musical benefits.
*We integrate music lessons with other, cross-curricular components: language arts, social studies, science, spatial relationships, physical education, art education, historical education, and mathematics.
*Our approach to music education develops the whole brain and the whole child.
*Our efforts are supported by neurological research which shows that music education stimulates both hemispheres of the brain (the only other activities to do this are higher level mathematics and logic processing), thus improving intellectual development, achievement, and test scores.
SPECIFIC GOALS FOR SPECIFIC GRADES:
The minute details of everything we do and teach cannot be captured in a short summary. In the sidebars provided, we have extracted and illustrated some of our most important lessons and concepts. The purpose is to give the reader a general overview of our teaching focus in each grade.
